Night of Grinding!
Greg and I will be going out of town for several days. During this time, both sets of parents will be helping with the household, cats, our parrots & chickens and the Partners for Parrots birds. This is a big task to ask of someone!

Samantha was a bit curious...

You can see that her fur is coming back in nicely, still looks bad at her hind end and tail area though :(
While we are away, the cats will be fed ground chicken, as I cannot see asking anyone else to feed them whole chicken for a variety of reasons.
So, tonight I lowered my standards a bit and bought "natural" (whatever that means....) chicken at Piggly Wiggly as well as hearts, gizzards, kidney and feet. This was all ground together with a bit of added taurine, psyllium husk powder, a sweet potato and a banana.
All of the meat and parts came to roughly 25# and I spent $31.47!! We spent over $100 recently on the good Rainbow Meadow Farms chicken, and that was about 20# without organs. That is enough to feed our guys for about three weeks.
I have jarred it as follows:
12 - 4 oz jars - individual portions
These were frozen for "just in case"
6 - 8 oz jars - one per day for Mama Cat
8 - 32 oz jars - these hold enough to feed four cats per day

Anyway, just doing some figuring here....
352 oz. @ $32.00
$0.09 per ounce
A single 4 ounce meal would cost $0.36!!!
Five cats at two meals a day = $3.60 a day, wow... of course this is not the only cost as the supplement costs were not added in, and usually they have a snack or two a day.
Feeding Rainbow Meadow Farms meat...
I feel REALLY good about doing this, but it is causing me to have a cranky husband b/c we pretty much never eat meat anymore, can't afford to when buying this stuff for the cats.
Anyway...
20# @ $105 = $0.33 a pound
320 ounces @ $105 = $0.33 an ounce
This does not include any organs, vegetable matter or supplements. So, perhaps it would be around $0.40 an ounce.
A single 4 ounce meal would cost $1.60
Five cats at two meals a day = $16 a day
eek! Greg and I don't even spend that much to feed ourselves in a day! It doesn't really seem to make sense when I add it up for a month...hmm...b/c the 20# of whole chicken (I did not grind it) lasted about three weeks.
Ugh, it is almost 3:00 am, I have to get up in three hours and I still have to wash yucky meat dishes and get some trash out. I don't need to be doing math right now!
